The movie jets on from one place to another like a bad action film, and it doesn't even give use the time or space to enjoy the beautiful world that has been created. There is no time to absorb an emotional moment, to breathe with the characters, to wonder at a beautiful setting. The movie moved so fast, I honestly thought it was playing on 2x speed. The first and most inescapable problem was the pacing. However, all of these good points could not make up for the bad ones. The fictional world of Kumandra was vibrant, colorful, and interesting. It's always nice to see yourself and your family in a fictional character. The fact Raya and the other characters had more varied facial features and skin tones, ones that matched more closely to my own, was another great thing. The idea of two opposing princesses was also interesting and unique. It was really great to see this more dynamic, realistic side of being a princess. Things like politics, diplomacy, knowledge of tactics and warfare. I feel the movie did a good job of presenting the sides of "princess-ship" that we haven't seen explored before. So, to be fair, my disappointment in this movie hit harder than it would have if it had been just another random movie pick on another random Friday. I was also hopeful about another step in the right direction for strong female characters in the Disney Princess line-up. The trailers seemed great with all sorts of promising Avatar the Last Airbender vibes, with interesting and more global settings that we don't usually see. It's one of my all time fave things to do, so I was super excited to see Raya. Because of the pandemic, I haven't gone to the movies in over a year, and I love going to the movies. So I went in to see Raya and the Last Dragon a while ago, and this is my honest opinion I wanted to share, and see if other people disagree or have something to add.įull disclosure, I had high expectations for this movie.
